Updating My Dining Room

Before I continue with the tour of Connie's Vermont home....
there're some things I want to share with the class....
Yesterday was my Dad's 98th birthday!!!!!
Sooooo.....
tonight I am having my family over to my house for a home cooked meal of take out Chinese!!!!!
My Dad is very fond of Chinese food.
I try to avoid it as it is very fattening!!!!!
But,
it's for his big day, so he gets what he wants.
The man could stand to gain some weight.
I should be so lucky.
To honor this great occasion, I went to my fancy linen store to look for new place mats.
You betcha!!!!
HOME GOODS!!!!!
I was sooooo excited about what I bought, that I took pictures to show you guys.
I found place mats, but the piece de resistance was a table cloth.
It looks like grain sack!!!!!
I mean....
wowzer!!!!!
It goes great with my cabbage leaf plates,
also from Home Goods...
My flat ware was from Target.
Too bad I'm boycotting them.....
This is my one year anniversary of my boycott.
I don't think they miss me, but I miss them,
but I'm sticking to my guns.
ANYWAY.....
back to my table cloth.
I love the way the stripes relate
to my awning stripe fabric from Brunschwig & Fils.
The whole table looks festive and fresh, just like my Dad!
I bought two of these table clothes, 'cuz you know they're going to get destroyed.
I also bought place mats.
I was going to use them because I like the way I've painted the top of the table.
Here's a shot of my new place mats,
try to contain yourselves....
They are very large, so some members of my family....
(you know who you are....)
won't put their wine glasses on the bare table and leave stains.
They're plastic, so are practical.
They look like baskets!
Sooooo.....
here I went and bought these really practical place mats.....
and what do I do?????
I'm back to using a table cloth.
Which I'll have to wash,
and fold up,
because I am certainly not going to iron the damn thing.
soooooo.....
happy birthday to my dad.
May he like what I'm having for dinner.
On that note,

oh this is bizarre!~ I had the same tablecloth in my cart at a Marshalls...but it was a red stripe...I was thinking of making pillows out of it...but then remembered I don't have time anymore, so I put it back on the shelf. Happy B'day to dad, thats awesome!!

What a lovely post- I can tell that your parents mean a lot to you- just by how lovingly you set your dad’s birthday table. I wish him the very best!
I had one of these green cabbage leave plates once upon a time- until my big standard poodle boy decided that I must have meant to serve him lunch on that, but he clumsily dropped it! He got better at not breaking dishes as he got to be older and more practiced at ‘helping’ himself to the goodies.
Betsy- I have a whole collection of Matelassé bedspreads that I use as tablecloths- they wash and wear like a dream! Cheap too, at Marshalls..or eBay.

LOVE the room and your new tablecloth looks fab..good enough to get me to go to Home Goods to find another one to go with my same cabbage plates! FYI I'm on my own permanent boycott of target. Have you noticed that there's no way to reach then via their web site? NO ACCIDENT! Not the worst customer service, they have NO customer service! The final straw for me, was to be referred to as a 'guest' and not a customer. As a guest, I won't be treated the way I was treated (not too differently from your experience) ever again. I've never had a host or hostess be as rude, inconsiderate and downright deceptive as they are. Think I'll go spit nails!

Happy Birthday to your dad! Tomorrow would be my dad's 101 st, but he has been gone since he was 50. I think it is wonderful he still enjoys Chinese food!

Happy Birthday to your dad. My mom was 98 last October. '-)
I'm making a trip to HG tomorrow in hopes that there might be one of these waiting for me. Love this look!

First and foremost, a Very Happy Birthday to your dad!! I think that tablecloth is great I can't believe how much it resembles a grain sack. It is amazing. Also the cabbage dishes are pretty. HG is the best!

Happy Birthday to your dad! wow I like all the things you bought. So it's a crap shoot. But since Dad is so special, use the tablecloth. (You can always redo the top of the table.)

Betsy - was wondering if you'd share why you are boycotting Target? I'm starting this with WalMart...... and was going to substitute Target.....

Thanks much - Janice

So lucky you are to still have your dad at 98.... Have a most wonderful celebration.... Teresa... P.S. love the table cloth... Green is my favorite color... Who cares what the food is when the table looks so great... Glad to know I'm not the only one who photographs her table when setting it for a dinner party...

Happy 98th Birthday to your dad, Betsy! That is just a wonderful milestone. May he have many more wonderful birthdays to celebrate!

My grandmother lived to be 97 as did her sister and one brother. She got married at close to 80. Can you believe it? I just did a post on it, AND she married he old fiancee whom she jilted for my grandfather. She once told me that she only loved two men and had the great good fortune to be married to both of them. She was such a sweetie.

Your linens are lovely. Those are a great find. I'm always on the lookout for runners for our round table as I end up seating about four there, and for some reason, placemats tend to overlap. So I've taken to crisscrossing runners. Hey, whatever works, right? ;-)

Please give your father my kindest regards and many happy returns!

XO,

Sheila

Wow, 98! That is wonderful. Happy birthday Betsy's dad. I love the tablecloth, table top & chair slips. I always spray my tablecloth with Scotchguard before I set the table & it really helps with the stains. Suzi
