Different Styles for Different Folks....Choosing a Designer

OK Klass....
It's time to talk about the fact that different people like different styles.
Some folks like a lot of fabric around them, in order to feel relaxed in their bedrooms.
Some folks like a lot of pattern around them, in order to feel cozy in their bedrooms.
Some folks like a lot of color around them, in order to feel at home in their bedrooms.
AND....
Some folks don't want any of that, in order to love their bedrooms.

A good designer has to figure out what each client needs for his or her home,
not....
dictate the same things for each space, disregarding the emotional needs of each client!!!!!
Since I'm a fabulous designer.....
I create different looks for each person, trying....
 (sometimes succeeding)....
 to meet their needs.
This post is in response to some of the comments from the last post.
Don't get me wrong!!!!
I love your comments!!!!!
But that doesn't mean that you guys won't get a rebuttal....
I did Kris's bedroom for Kris.
My assignment was a room that wasn't fussy, was calm in color and was handsome.
A couple of you guys didn't like the short bedskirt.
Well....
Kris didn't want a lot of fabric in the room.
Her hubby has asthma, the draperies were as far as I could go.
She loves the feel of the metal bed and short skirt and hemp rug.
We didn't want a deep pile carpet due to dust.
The room, now reminds her of an upscale field tent camp.
This room makes her feel very serene!!!!!
To show how I tailor my design depending on the client.....
let me show you a side by side of my bedroom next to her's.
Now.....
Let me get to the topic of bed skirt lengths.
Some folks only like long bedskirts.
well.....
Styles change, looks change, doing something always the same way is boring.....
I tend to like shorter skirts on iron beds.
I don't know why.....
I just do.
It started when I changed my brass bed in my previous home to an iron bed.
I used the same dust ruffle, but the iron bed was higher and the skirt didn't hit the floor.
My first thought was "OH NO!!!!!".
This was years ago, when I was a young designer, just starting out.
My knee jerk reaction was that bed skirts were supposed to go down to the floor.
Well.......
After living with it for a week.....
I realized that I liked it shorter!!!!!
House Beautiful Magazine
It's now in my upstairs guest room in my condo.
(as shown in the picture in the collage above....)
This may have been when I first started thinking about what I liked,
and not what I was supposed to like.
I started to spend more time pouring over European design magazines, as they seemed to show work that was less cookie cutter, more esoteric, eccentric, imaginative.
I decided that I wanted a short skirt for my master bedroom in my cabin TOO!!!!
Traditional Home Magazine
I'm sure I've done this other places, but I can't remember right now, and I'm done writing this post.
Sooooo.....
my advice to you guys is to think about what you like,
not what you think others expect you to like.
Soooo...
for the lovers of long bed shirts,
keep em long!!!!!
BUT FOR ME.....
I'm gonna mix it up, baby!!!!!

THAT'S why you are a great designer: you give the client what THEY want (but oy! come on . . .sometimes wasn't it SO damn hard??). I knew that bedroom wasn't going to be exactly your style - but knew you were giving your friend exactly what she wanted . . . that's why your a designer - and I'm not:)

Oh - and by the way - as long as I'm yappin' - time to change your head mast (or whatever you call it) - the stripes are nice - but time for something different . . .

Hi Betsy! I think the room looks great even if it's not all my style. I love reading and learning from your expertise and take what I can to use in my own home. I too like the short bedskirt for some reason.. and I also like how you left the pillows flat and not upright but that might be another debate.. ha! ha! take care, love what you do! Maryann

Hi Betsy!! I have never left a comment before on anyone's blog this is a first for me. I love your style. I once hired a decorator who although I really liked her a lot, she would never listen to me. I prefer the way you decorate your own home. That is exactly my taste. She sent me modern pieces and lots of chinese inspired pieces. I was very young and intimidated and bought a lot of furniture that I don't like. She used to tell people we met how I was not her sophisticated client but her cute client. I love anything with cabbage roses and needlepoint pieces makes my heart skip a beat. Everyone has to find their own style. Your blog is one of the best so funny and real. Thanks. Happy New Year!!!!

I love seeing pictures of your lake cabin. I remember first reading about you in Traditional Home magazine several years ago and kept that issue for so long. I am so happy you share your talent with your blog!

I like shorter bed skirts too. I don't have a cleaning person, just me, so it makes life easier. I also have a metal bed now that I think of it. Yes, the English have they're own cozy bedroom style. Just toss that spread over the pillows and be done with it!! I like both your friends room and your room. I agree all being the same is boring. I LOVE the fact you both used wallpaper!!!

Could you please give instructions on the correct placement of rugs under beds and in living areas?

But...but Betsy, where would hide all the crap under my bed without my long dust ruffle? Seriously though, you are one heck of a designer.

You are the designer Betsy! There are a lot of rooms that I like...Kris' room for example...but even though I like them, I'm not sure I could live with them. But then, I don't have to! Keep on edumacating us...obviously we need it...hehe! ;)

This may be one of favorite posts. I do love all the design direction/information you give regularly. But this one relieves my decorating fears. It give me permission to love what I love. I know this intuitively, of course but need reminders and when a BIG TIME FANCY SUCCESSFUL DEISGNER reminds me it helps it stick :-) I did not comment nor read the comments about this room because it is not really my particular style taste so i just studied it for elements that would work in my style. I LOVE the word "Handsome" in Kris's instructions. It IS handsome. And I loved "upscale field tent" cause now i totally get her design asthetic and makes me really love this room. She must be a fun person with an adventurous spirit :) . And! Of course health concerns SHOULD be addressed! I have a dog and am allergic to dogs (not allergic to loving dogs though so I have one) but it defiantly informs my style decisions. You really are a design rock star, Besty. I am blessed blog. Suzi

Ditto what Allison said. I love your designs. I didn't intentionally mean to be negative. I wish I had even a teeny bit of your talent. Well more money would help too...

I like shorter bedskirts, love English looking rooms. It's the gathered over time, used and loved look, that makes me happy and contented. I have always loved your designs, nothing has changed.

I forgot to mention that I too have an iron bed and my original dust ruffle didn't reach the floor. Sooo I ordered one with a longer drop and put that one under the old one. So my guess is I am in vogue having both lengths! LOL And that is the long and short of it...

I like bed skirts that purse a little at the floor. Am I fired?

I appreciate clients who express their wishes since it's their freakin' house. Way to be, Betsy's client Kris. Go on with your short dust ruffle self. That room looks like someone with style lives there, rather than styled by someone who does not.

I like shorter bed skirts too. But, in my 2 daughters rooms and guest room, years ago, I had them to the floor so that I could store wrapping paper, etc. and they had extra toys (way to many) they could shove them in and under. Can I come stay in your guest room, it is so pretty. lol Have a good weekend. Oh, I had a decorator out to our new house, and I only got one 1 good idea from her, she wanted it to look 'her' way. Too bad, that is why I have never used a decorator. (And I have always been asked who my decorator is? HA) Paula
