More of This @#$ Ballroom!!!!!

I love it when people
(you know who you are.....)
ask me questions about what I'm showing you
and it neatly dovetails into what I was planning to write about in the next post.
Lots of you (2) asked about the servers against the wall.....
If you notice the pipe running from the floor to the ceiling.....
you may have an inkling of what I was covering up.....
There were honking big ugly radiators.
IN THE
 MIDDLE
 OF MY SHOWHOUSE ROOM!!!

I drew up the design for these babies, and had my workroom, Drape It, make them for me out of plywood.
Then I had them upholstered in more of the cabbage rose linen.
I found the legs in a catelogue that we screwed into the bottom of the boxes.
We used cream colored fabric cording for the criss-cross effect, and glued  fabric covered buttons over the points of the diamonds.
I had glass cut to fit for the tops, and this way created serving areas in the ballroom.
These cabinets had no back, so we were able to just slide them over the radiators.
I am very clever!!!!!!
The server above was used for the dessert station.
There was LOTS of chocolate.....
I didn't have nothin'!!!
The other server was used for BOOZE!!!!!
Chocolate and Booze.......
PARTAY!!!!

Sooooooo......
The radiators were just one of the awkward elements to the space.
The two bay windows were lovely, but how the @#$ was I going to decorate them to make them make sense in a BALLROOM?????

Soooooooo.......
In the dancing area, I placed a chaise, so someone who was tired from all that there dancing, could have a pretty place to put up her tootsies.
I'm sorry the picture is so blurry, but I had to blow it up from a scanned image.....
In 1997 we didn't have digital stuff, ya know?????

In the other bay window area, I fell back on the tried and true trick of lazy decorators.....
I stuck a topiary in the window!!!!!
A really big sucker!!!!
I still have some of this ivy hanging around.
Fake ivy is a really useful thingy!!!!!
I put some on my outside trellis, and have received nothing but grief from my family and friends.
Look you guys.....
NOTHING WAS GROWING THERE!!!
I wanted at least something green.

So that's it for today.
It's so much fun to look back on my old designs and realize that I still like them.

You are better off with fake ivy than real ivy - much better. Outside ivy ivy is a constant struggle to keep from being strangled. It is not nice.

Hi Betsy- You know when you showed the 1st picture of this room, I thought, oh that is a pretty living room. Then, you blew me out of the water with other pictures of the 'house size' room! Holy cr&p. You did a beautiful job in every bit of this room. You know you can buy 'fake' plastic
sheets of boxwood on line, oh, you probably can get it wholesale somewhere. By the way, how many yards of fabric did you use? Or did you already tell us! Paula

Oh, I was telling you about the boxwood for your trellis. Paula

Kudzu is fast growing. I could send you some of ours from NC...oh, no, on second thought. You are too organized and neat to deal with kudzu......fake ivy it is, then.

I'm hoping there was some other form of heat after the radiators were covered in wood and fabric? Or maybe if the ballroom got busy with sweaty dancers (of course they would have used some beautifully fragranced deodorant and perfume)no one would have noticed if it did get cold. OK...just joking. I think it's a lovely way to disguise the radiators. And....I too used some fake ivy until my real plants started to grow around here. Guilty as charged :-)

I keep a notebook of tear sheets of rooms I like. The Sanderson ad has been in it for years. In fact, I decorated our family room we had years ago with red loveseats, a red rose chair (waverly had a similar fabric to the Sanderson), and two red & taupe striped chairs and, of course, lots of wonderful bibelots. My mother called them dust catchers I absolutely adored that room; I shamelessly copied your ad as close as I could. We sold that house two years ago & I still miss that room. Had no idea who the designer was. Thank you so much for that room. Susie

I really like your "Go big or go home" attitude in decorating. It creates a time and place that stands alone. Does a project like this take months and months, or does it all happen in a quick whirlwind peppered with angst? Or, somewhere in between?

Yes tell how long it takes from concept through planning and installation~! I love the fake ivy trick, and the fun stories behind the pretty pics!
