Adding Fabric to Connie's Eating Area

OK Kampers....
today let's look at how we added the finishing touches with fabric to Connie and Chris's kitchen eating area.
I was working off the colors of a fabric from the previous owners.
Connie bought the family room draperies from them when she bought the house, and they were made out of a really beautiful fabric, but the color blue was
 really really really really
 hard to match.
The were hung in the family room area on the other side of the kitchen from the eating area.
So,
even though they weren't right next to each other, the fabrics were in the same large space and needed to relate.
I had to look through the whole Boston Design Center before I found a fabric that not only was the same color blue and tan, but would work with the existing pattern.
I finally lucked out with a simple stripe that had the casual feel I was going for, yet worked with the more formal antiques.
Don't ask me who it's from, I can't remember 'cuz I have lost my mind.
The big score, though, was when Connie and I found the host and hostess chairs.
They were antiques and had been reupholstered in a beautiful crewel fabric.
I feel like an idiot because I didn't take a picture of the back of the chairs.
The backs are covered in a tan small check that matches the tones of the room.
These chairs were not cheap, because they had been recovered.
Sooooo....
if we had to reupholster them to make them go with the space, it wouldn't have been a good use of Connie and Chris's moolah.
LUCKILY!!!!!
The fabric worked perfectly with the other colors and patterns in the room.
I would never have thought of looking for a pattern like this if I had to redo the chairs.
It was serendipitous that what was on them was better than my tiny brain could have envisioned.
(like my water mark????? I blew the picture up.......)
The whole space was coming together and starting to feel cozy and pretty and a good place to chow down to some serious grub.
I would like to add a seagrass rug to go under the table, it will make it feel more complete as a separate space, and finish off the look I am going for.
(from which I am going. I have a horrible habit of ending sentences in prepositions.)
(It's better than ending a sentence in a proposition.....)
My goal this winter is to convince Connie and Chris to change the chandelier.
We (Connie) wanted something fast and economical to hang over the table.
But now that the rest of the room is done, it's not of the same design  level as the other pieces.
So,
Please,
everyone
leave a comment telling Connie to change the chandelier!!!!!!

on that note,
Latah, Gatah

It's all beautiful... except the chandelier!

Fabulous room, love the stripe fabric. I agree about the chandelier

Yes, the chandelier must go, or put different candle lights on it, like a frosty blue to match wall color and paint cream color on the black base. Just saying...............Bobbie

Correction.....Paint the chandelier BROWN base, cream color........Bobbie

When you said it wasn't the same quality, I finally understood why the chandelier doesn't work even though it would be good in another setting. If I had a vote, I would change it because I think it will make all the difference in the world. Too much?

P.S. Connie. All you see is the chandy when you look at the picture. not good.

I agree. The chandelier should go! I'm not just saying so because you told me to, either. You just gave me permission to say exactly the first thing that came to mind when I saw the pictures. As a matter of fact I was shocked to see that you'd use such a chandelier. Happy to see that it wasn't your idea! I suppose if one really liked the idea of that piece it would have it's use in some sort of application but NOT IN THIS ONE.

Yep, not loving the light above the dining room table (chandelier?). How about something like this?

The room has so many rectangular shapes that you need a curvy chandelier to add balance.

Betsy isn't crazy. The chandelier should go...into a Floridian dumpster.

Aww Betsy it looks absolutely amazing, the plate racks are just made for that space :) Aaaand I am so glad you finished off by saying the chandy needs to go, all through the reveal I couldn't help feeling the candle chandelier didn't belong. I just know that Connie and Chris will agree and trust your vision, cannot wait to see what you will choose as an alternative <3

Beautiful room, of course! Two things: whoever sits in the lovely white chairs must put a towel down first so as not to leave food stains. Unless they have impeccable manners! And... I noticed that awful chandelier and thought you had lost your mind! So glad to know the truth!!!

LOVE those plate racks! Too bad that light fixture is so distracting and not in a good way. (How was that Betsy)?

I love everything about the room except the chandelier and I would have never have said that before because I'm too polite but I agree 100% with you, it does that room no justice!!! Please, what color blue is on the walls?

Love, love the striped fabric!!

I'm sure Connie was only using this as a placeholder chandelier until the perfect one could be found. We will be seeing pictures of the final version soon. (Occasionally an optimist.)

Betsy is always right...just give in and get a new chandelier.

I think I already posted my nicer thoughts about that hanging light outfit (let's not dignify it by calling it a chandelier). Glad I was not alone But suspect Betsy was just checking to see if we had learned anything much from her posts........see, we have learned about style.....
Now I fear to tread/tred? upon this subject, but will anyway. I have a seagrass sort of rug in my breakfast room and it is too dreary and boring a brown to be believed. It has to be vacuumed every day to keep crumbs from embedding in the weave. Have seagrass if you must, but please let us know how it works out. I'm moving, so can leave this one behind. But never another brown nightmare.
How about painting a pretty rug on the floor? Dry mop heaven......

The room looks fantastic...until you get to the chandelier. Normally I wouldn't say anything, because I was raised to say nothing unless it's positive. I am anxious to see what you put up there! ;)

I'm so glad you feel that way about the chandelier because every time I look at that room from the posts my first thought was 'ugh'. It needs some kind of of a pop-either in the rug, chandelier or perhaps a darker plate here and there? Right now it's kind of pastel calm (only my view). I love the plate racks-pure genius.

I'm sorry--I just commented with an 'ugh' but not for the room--it is for the chandelier and it's look. It's totally out of place and takes away from the quality and beauty of the room. I do believe the entire room, however, needs a pop of color though (even with the beachy /Florida look). Perhaps that will be achieved with the new chandelier or rug (or one or two brighter plates?). I really admire all you do, Betsy, and enjoy your cheeky comments, as well.

Floor cloth? I always wanted one, but haven't seen any for a while.I was too scared to say anything about the chandy before....It's not just the design level, but the design aesthetic. The room has gone in another direction, although lighter candles would help in the interim. I also think a few silver/pewter pieces would look great on the stupendous plate racksP.S. When you post the chandy change please remember to snap some pics of the chair backs.

Loving these posts, and I didn't care for the chandelier from the start. So fun to get to know Connie too.

Yes, love the rest of the room but the chandy looks too heavy with all the other items. It is the item that your eye is drawn to first.

Rebecca Deeprose said...

Sorry Connie~ it really does have to go.

I love every single thing in the room, except for said chandelier. :( Pretty somewhere else, just not this room. I thought it was just me! Have you gotten rid of that other wooden thing that keeps showing up? Beautiful home!!

Unknown said...

It's all coming together beautifully, except the chandelier needs something,or a new one.

The tray with candles is a chandelier? It really needs to be replaced with an antique or something with class like the rest of this room. The rest of the room looks marvelous, dahling.

Connie's new home is lovely. You have done a wonderful job, Betsy! I agree about the chandelier; I think it is too industrial looking - maybe one of the chandeliers with the little shells.
Can't wait to see more.

The chandelier needs to go. The room is like a tastefully dressed lady waiting to add the finishing touch of her jewelry. Let the chandelier provide that bit of sparkle and bling.
