Reupholstering a Tiny Stool for Me Me Me

I am finally finishing up my study.
I got the two fabrics I had ordered for my desk chair and little footstool.
Today, I am just going to show off my leetle stool.
I know, I know.....
I still need to finish showing my bedroom, but this is the decorating version of a cliff hanger......
Is your adrenaline racing?????

When we last left off my study.....
my little stool looked like this.....

So, I hauled it up to my sewing workroom.
It was very heavy!!!!!
My plan was to strip it down to the frame and rework all the interior stuffing and stuff.
Then I thought....
"Betsy, what are you.....NUTS?????"
So, I decided to just build on what was already there.
The middle of the upholstery was sort of sway back.....
Concave.....
The opposite of my abdomen.....
So, I cut a piece of batting to fill it in.....
Then, cut another piece the size of the top of the stool.....
And then used spray adhesive to glue the two pieces of fill together.....
Then I cut a piece of this wonderful blue ticking
that is from Michael S Smith's fabric line: Jasper.
And starting from the middle of each side, stapled it working from the middle out to the corners, pulling it smooth as I went.
 True to form.....
I forgot to take a picture at this point!!!!!
Welllll.....
Anyway.....
To continue.....
So, after I attached the fabric with staples, I trimmed the excess with a razor blade.
Now it should be mentioned, that this it the only use I get out of razor blades.
Doing DIY stuff.
'Cuz I certainly don't waste any of this effort on ME!!!!!

Then I made a tape trim out of the striped fabric, by cutting a long piece and folding it over, and ironing it into a nice sharp fold.
This is the back of it, I wanted you to see that it doesn't need to be perfect.....
Then I used a decorative nail head tack, to attach the tape to the bottom edge of the fabric....
I tucked the fabric in on itself inside the fold, and made a small overlap to end the tape trim.

Here she is in all her redressed glory!!!!!

And here she is in her home.....
 Here's another view.....
So,
that's if for today,

Betsy, I love it! What a great stool base to start with, and adding the trim with nailhead? brilliant. I just redid an itty bitty stool (which I show on my blog... http://willowispandrea.blogspot.ca/2012/07/new-footstool-for-sunroom.html ...I'll include the link just in case your stool wants to chat online to my stool) and I wasn't nearly as smart and just glued ribbon around the edge. The good news is I have another itty bitty stool to re-do, with which I shall use your edging technique. Thanks for the tip!

Ohhhhh how lovely! I liked it before and after equally, sometimes something shabby like that is charming, but the striped material is lovely too! :)

I've loved your work since your Trad Home days years ago - I saw your florals and dog collections and I knew you were a soul mate. Sometime can you blog about how your get your cushions mounded - what you use in addition to foam? Thanks for all the info you give. LOVE your slip cover tutorials and everything else in your blog.

I was just at the sewing store today and saw the very cool tool to make your own 'bias' tape out of fabric. So much easier than folding and ironing. Stick it in one end, pull out the tape from the other. But I love that stool and love your ideas.

Absolutely stunning! Beautiful fabric! I wait with bated breath for each of your posts! But must admit, I was horrified to see you using what appears to be a beautiful hand made quilt on your work station!!! :o(
I had to comment on that because I am a quilter, and quilts are very precious to me! Otherwise, beautiful job on the foot stool, and your entire room is gorgeous!

Hi Betsy, I am still catching up on all your posts. This one about the footstool is timely for me. (Well, perhaps it is simply timely that I finally found it.) Anyway, I have a lovely little footstool that I purchased two weeks ago at a "thrift shop". It is Louis XV style with very curvy legs and clusters of flowers on the legs and apron of the frame - oo, la, la! No idea what fabric originally adorned it because there was nothing there - just a frame with tons of staples and tacks grasping at minute shreds of fabric and foam.

After cleaning it up and attaching a wooden platform, a slab of 2" thick foam and a layer of batting to make it nice and soft, I was at a loss for fabric. Never the need to drive over a fabric store because I have piles and piles of gorgeous French style fabrics - everything from regal to rustic. I wanted something simple that would not to compete with the beauty of the frame.

Your post helped to solve my dilema. What I need to do is what you did - chose a simple fabric and use decorative upholstery tacks to pull the color of the wood up into the fabric.

Merci, merci!

Smiles from My Slice of Provence,

Most people tend to put the least thought into buying footstools compared to other types of furniture. This is a pity because you really can make a difference to your living room with a footstool.
